Swiss Tamil youth demonstrate in front of UN

Tamils living in Switzerland marched from the Geneva Main Railway station to the United Nations Wednesday evening urging the international community to stop the genocidal war on the Tamils in Vanni in the island of Sri Lanka and to apply pressure on the Government of Sri Lanka to bring about an immediate cease fire.

Around 2,000 Tamils participated in the procession and the rally held subsequently in front of the UN from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Tamil Youth Organization (TYO) arranged the event with the help of other Tamil diaspora organizations.

The participants shouted the following slogans.

  • Stop the genocide in Sri Lanka!
  • Save the Tamils from genocide!
  • Look at the plight of Vanni Tamils!
  • Bring about a ceasefire in Sri Lanka!

They also carried placards depicting the atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan armed forces.  
The youths also distributed thousands of leaflets in French and English.
S. Mahinan, a TYO activist presided to the meeting where Mr. T. Namasivayam, the Secretary of Tamil Forum Switzerland (TFS), Mr. Shan Thavarajah, the Vice President of TFS, Mr. K. Albert, the Leader of the Cultural Wing, and representatives of TYO Miss. Thilany, Miss. Nira, Miss. Kanuja, Kuruparan and Pirasath addressed the gathering.
