UNP Calls For Clarity On 13th Amendment

The UNP has called on the Government to clarify its stance with regard to the 13th Amendment.

“Is it 13, 13 minus or 13 plus, we have to know what the Government is thinking as far as a solution is concerned,” UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa said.

Speaking of the recent events in Geneva, he also criticised the way foreign policy makers had handled the situation in India.

Citing a joint press statement with the UN made when External Affairs Minister G. L. Pieris visited India, he said that Sri Lanka had committed to ‘building upon’ the 13th Amendment.

Indian External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna had also said that President  Rajapaksa had confirmed his commitment to implementing a 13 Plus approach as well, and Pieris had said nothing at the time. However when Krishna made a statement to this effect in the Raj Sabha, he had been questioned by Members of Parliament following media reports to the effect that Sri Lanka had no plans to implement 13 Plus.
