Rahman, the ‘Thamizhan’ of the year

image Oscar-Grammy winning music composer AR Rahman was honoured at his hometown Chennai on Friday evening, when he was presented the ‘Thamizhan of the Year’ award by veteran filmmaker K Balachander.

The award function was organized by a Tamil news channel. Interestingly, it was Balachander’s Kavithalaya which produced Mani Ratnam-directed ‘Roja’, Rahman’s maiden film as music composer.

Speaking on the occasion, Balachander lauded Rahman as one whose "breath and prayer" was music, while the music maestro expressed his happiness on being selected for the honour. "It is a great moment of pride," he said.

Along with Rahman, ace writer Jayakanthan, Cancer Institute chairperson V Shanta, industrialist Venu Srinivasan, agricultural scientist M S Swaminathan and chess maestro Viswanathan Anand were also honoured.
