UNP Rebels Willing To Consider Common Opposition

The rebel group of the opposition United National Party (UNP) says it is willing to consider supporting a common opposition which will include former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.

UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said that the UNP as a party should support such a common opposition but the final decision lies with the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe. He noted that what is important is not what an individual thinks but rather what matters for the country and its future.

The UNP MP said that the opposition needs to be strong to take the fight to the government on national issues. In order to do that he said the opposition must have a common goal although opinions on some issues may differ.

Alliance members of the government also have different views but still stand firm in their common goal, Jayasekara said.

He said that the main focus of a common opposition should be to abolish the executive presidency and re-establish democracy. The UNP MP also said that a committee should be formed under a common opposition to decide who will lead the alliance and who will hold the other posts.
