Katchatheevu: TESO to move Supreme Court

Recalling that Katchatheevu was ceded to Sri Lanka ignoring the objections of the DMK in the Assembly and Parliament, party leader M. Karunanidhi said Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation (TESO) would approach the Supreme Court to get back the island.

A resolution adopted in the TESO meeting said if a part of India was ceded to another country, the proposal should be placed before Parliament and a law should be enacted for the purpose.

“But in the case of Katchatheevu no Act was passed and the decision of the Indian government to hand over the island was against the Constitution,” Mr. Karunanidhi said, explaining the resolution.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has already filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking the abrogation of the 1974 maritime boundary agreement under which Katchatheevu fell on the Sri Lankan side.
