The Sri Lankan military says more than a dozen battles with the rebels have erupted across the northern war zone.

The military said in a statement that at least 12 battles broke out throughout the day Sunday in the Mullaittivu region. The military said it recovered the bodies of four Tamil Tiger rebels.

Other battles broke out along the front lines in the Kilinochchi and Jaffna districts. The military said soldiers were wounded in the fighting, but did not say how many.

It was not possible to immediately contact rebel spokesmen.

The Tamil Tigers have fought since 1983 to create an independent homeland for ethnic minority Tamils.
