Sri Lankan troops battle rebels

_45317340_006575424-1 Fresh fighting has broken out in northern Sri Lanka as government troops battle to capture the Tamil Tiger rebels’ stronghold of Kilinochchi.

The rebels said they had killed at least 60 soldiers, but the military has said 12 were dead and 12 more missing.

It comes after more than 120 fighters from each side were said to have died in attacks during the past week.

Independent reporters are banned from the war zone and it is impossible to confirm either side’s claims.

The website Tamilnet quoted rebel leaders as saying they had killed at least 60 soldiers and forced the army to retreat from south of Kilinochchi. _45288671__45270299_sri_lanka_466_rel_3-1
