Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has fired artillery shells targeting Tharmapuram Junction, the new administrative centre of Vanni Thursday around 1:00 p.m., killing one civilian and causing injuries to several. One of the shells exploded very close to the hospital. The civilian infrastructure, including the hospital, banks and administrative bodies serving the Internally Displaced People of Vanni, are located in Tharmapuram. Tension prevails at the hospital, which struggles to cope with the civilian casualties.

The shelling on the civilian administrative centre in densely populated Vanni comes in the wake of SLA denial of medical transport and humanitarian supplies to the civilian population in Vanni.
