Rebel bombing kills 7 in east Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s military says a rebel bomb attack has killed three air force troops and four civilians in the east.

Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara says the Tamil Tiger rebels set off a roadside bomb Friday morning near the eastern city of Trincomalee as a convoy escorted by the troops drove past.

Though the government captured the east from the rebels in 2007, attacks have increased in recent months.

The bombing came as government forces pressed ahead with their offensive against the rebels’ last remaining stronghold in the north. Officials said they hoped to end the nation’s civil war soon.
