Sri Lanka says it captured last rebel stronghold

Sri Lanka’s army commander says the military has captured the Tamil Tiger rebels’ last major stronghold of Mullaittivu in the country’s northeast.

 

Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka said Sunday on national television that troops captured the town earlier in the afternoon. He said that the 25-year-old civil war was 95 percent over.

 

Many of the remaining rebel fighters were presumed to be in the nearby jungles of the northeast.
