Ramadoss: Tamil Nadu Parties should pressurize Indian Government to recognize Eelam

PMK founder-leader Dr. Ramadoss called upon the political parties in Tamil Nadu to exert pressure on the Union Government of India to recognize "Tamil Eelam for Eelam Tamils" while addressing mediapersons Sunday. Reacting to a remark by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi that he was unable to save the Eelam Tamils, Dr.Ramadoss said that Karunanidhi had to exert pressure on the Union Government in order to bring about a ceasefire. "The General Body Meeting of the DMK will take place on February 15. In the intervening three weeks, what will be the multi fold miseries that the Eelam Tamils will be made to face? Why this delay?" he wondered.

Ramadoss suggested that instead of requesting New Delhi to bring about a ceasefire, the Chief Minister should stress the Union Government to recognize Tamil Eelam as the only solution for the Eelam Tamils. "This is not new to the DMK, after all they have passed resolutions in many conferences, rallies that separate statehood for Eezham is the only solution to the ethnic conflict. The DMK should once again take up its original stance, only then we will get the expected resolution." he said.
The PMK leader pointed out that it was impossible to find out a solution for the Tamil situation "within the framework of a unitary Sri Lanka" or "within the framework of the existing Sri Lankan Constitution." Therefore, the DMK’s General Body meeting should take up a stance in support of a sovereign state for the Tamils, Dr.Ramadoss added.

"There is no place even for a federal form of Government in the Sri Lankan Constitution. From 1948, till today, not a single Sinhalese individual has been ready to accept the fact that Tamil people should be given their due rights. Whenever the Constitution has been amended to include rights for the Tamils , the subsequent Government has repealed it." he said. Therefore, it is meaningless to say that a political solution to the Tamil problem is possible within a unified Sri Lanka and under the framework of the present Constitution, Dr. Ramadoss charged.

He also expressed his willingness to engage in direct debate with any organization that contested this claim. He called upon the political parties in Tamil Nadu to realize that Sri Lanka was a unique nation–only those who studied its history would know that the demand for a separate Eelam was justified, he said.

Dr. Ramadoss said that had people of any other linguistic group suffered in a neighbouring country, India would have intervened and carved out a separate state for them. For instance, India was responsible for the creation of Bangladesh, he said.
