image The 81st edition of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences will unfold on the 22nd of February and there is tremendous news for India. Three Indians are in contention for the coveted little trophy called Oscar.

Though ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has been directed by a Britisher and has international relevance as far as the making of the film is concerned, the film carries with it good Indian talent. The film is currently making waves internationally and the very fact that it won four Golden Globe awards and ten nominations at the Oscars has given it a reputation like no other.

Well, everyone knows A. R. Rahman has been nominated in three categories (best music score and for composing two songs – ‘Jai Ho’ and ‘O Saya’). There are two other Indians who are also in contention for the Oscars.

Famous lyricist Gulzar has been nominated along with Rahman for the song ‘Jai Ho’. Resul Pookutty has been nominated for Best Sound Mixing along with Ian Tapp, Richard Pryke.

Maya Arulpragasam, a Britisher of Sri Lankan Tamil descent has also been nominated for co-writing the song ‘O Saya’ along with Rahman.

Three Indians and many Oscars to win. 2009 is probably the best year yet for India as far as the Oscars are concerned. And all this despite the fact that the Oscars are meant to felicitate American films and its technicians.
