Tamil leaders label Pranab visit futile

Frontline leaders in Tamil Nadu, including Dr.S.Ramadoss, Vaiko and Thirumavalavan have expressed their disappointment that Indian External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee never pressed for an immediate ceasefire when he met Sri Lankan President Rajapaksa during his emergency visit to Colombo Tuesday night.

PMK founder-leader Dr. S.Ramadoss observed in a press release that while the world was observing January 27 as Anti-Genocide Day, the International Community was turning a blind-eye to the civilian carnages that were taking place in Sri Lanka’s embattled north.

Mincing no words, Dr. S. Ramadoss said, "All nations in the world have asked Sri Lanka to immediately stop the war. But India which is hardly 30 km away is yet to raise its voice, even though its constituent state Tamil Nadu is crying out in frustration–and we have even passed a resolution ‘The Final Request’ seeking New Delhi to call for an immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka."

Even as Tamils worldwide eagerly await for India’s intervention to stop the genocide, Pranab Mukherjee has not even stated a single word about ending the war, he lamented. "Pranab says to the media that he is going to save the people who are affected by the war. How can they ever be saved if the war is not stopped?" he wondered.

The PMK leader called upon Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi "to contact Pranab Mukherjee in Colombo and ask him to come back to India after demanding a ceasefire" since only this would heal the hurt felt by sixty-five million Tamils in India.

In a hardhitting press release MDMK General Secretary Vaiko attacked the Indian Government for aiding the genocide of the Tamils on the island. He dubbed Pranab’s visit as a total eyewash.

At a press meet organized Tuesday evening, VCK leader Thol.Thirumavalavan said that Pranab Mukherjee’s visit would yield no solution to the problems of the Eelam Tamils. "There was no improvement in the grave humanitarian crisis and massive civilian killings in the Vanni following Foreign Affairs Secretary Shivshanker Menon’s visit. The Minister’s visit is going to be as futile," he charged.

Thirumavalavan also pointed out that New Delhi had assured the Tamil Nadu Government that it would send Pranab Mukherjee to Colombo to press for a ceasefire. No mention has however been made of putting an end to the war, in official or political circles in the Union Government, he added.

The VCK leader echoed the fears of the Tamil population in the state stating that "even this visit would only strengthen India-Sri Lanka ties and would go towards annihilating Tamil people." He also called upon all the Tamil members of parliament to resign en masse if Sri Lanka failed to halt the war.

Thirumavalavan has also expressed disappointment that the DMK General Body’s meeting scheduled for Feb 15 could be "too late."
