Choices limited for the World of Authorities

“A major problem with the world authorities today is that they live in their own world and try to look at the crisis in the island through their eyes. This is neo-Orientalism,” writes a New Delhi based scholar of South Asian studies in response to the recent stand of Tokyo Co-chairs. The way the world authorities have been grooming the situation in the island of Sri Lanka, they have narrowed down their choices. Either they have to separate the two ethnicities deeply divided by a protracted war by accepting the two nation states in the island, or allow the Sinhala nation’s attempt of genocide and total annihilation of Tamil identity, facing consequences of protracted turmoil coupled with global Tamil backfire. It is for the world authorities to decide whether their interests in Colombo are that worthy or important, he writes.

When the UN spokesperson in Colombo, Gorden Weiss says that he doesn’t know from where the shell came killing civilians and AFP reports it, one has to understand that it was a shell fired by the Sri Lanka Army. If it is an LTTE act then they will not hesitate to say. This is mutual buttress in the world of authority in which everybody’s slip is showing.

US President Barack Obama saying people of Sri Lanka to find a friend and partner in him means that the United States is going to be actively involved in the deliberations of the crisis. Such is the plight of language in the hands of world authorities.

The world of authority doesn’t give in easily to aspirations of people, ideological stances and logic of humanity, but can only be throttled by ground realities and by the hard will of the people resisting to orchestration of ground realities by authority.

Ground reality not necessarily means military occupation of land or holding on to land. It is ultimately the exerted expression of the heartbeat of people.

The significance of the LTTE is its prime capacity in the expression of ground reality wished by Eezham Tamils in their national liberation struggle. Whatever the physical conditions may be, it will continue to be so, manifesting ground realities, unless fundamentals causing the crisis change, influencing Eezham Tamil mind for new ground realities.

The LTTE doesn’t hold the people, but the collective will of the people in response to the brutality they faced from authority manifested LTTE and its attributes. In this sense no one can deny the predominance of the LTTE in the expression of Tamil aspirations.

The bias of the international community, especially India and the Co-chairs, in hitherto weakening the Tamil side in favour of the Rajapaksa regime is explicit. It is not merely arms, money and diplomacy but also the labeling of the Tamil struggle.

India is once again missing the bus and is engaged only in misdirecting the world authorities.
The LTTE has not so far demonstrated its ability of materializing a ground situation in the south or in the economy of the island, perhaps hoping until now, not to jeopardize its possibilities of getting the recognition of the international community. The LTTE reverting to guerilla war can prove to be worse.

Some among the world authorities seem to envisage the conversion of the LTTE like the JVP. They don’t realize the generic difference that the JVP is a movement within the Sinhala Buddhist nation and the LTTE is a movement for the creation of another nation. Rajapaksa regime has already answered the ignorant by rejecting all possibilities of political role for the LTTE.

A major problem with the world authorities today is that they live in their own world and try to look at the crisis in the island through their eyes. This is neo-Orientalism.

Many of those who influence policy decisions in the world of authorities are novices to the Sri Lankan model of the crisis. Today’s generation in the West fails to grasp the continued relevance of ethnonationalism in another part of the world.

Obama’s preaching of Pluralism to Sri Lanka, from the vantage of the new nation of USA and of Europe that redefined nationalism after centuries of wars, may sound good, but there is perhaps only a microscopic minority among the Sinhala elite, politicians and diplomats who may accept it in their heart.

The ground reality of the Sinhalese is the mindset consciously cultivated through indelible images of myth, in the course of history. It is at its height at the moment, thanks to Rajapaksa & co and the conscious abetment given to this mindset by the world of authorities.

The hard truth of the total ground reality in the island of Sri Lanka today is that Tamils can find existence, safety and dignity only under Tamil hands of their choice. The Sinhalese polity will never allow any other alternative.

The way the world authorities have been grooming the situation in the island of Sri Lanka they have made their choice extremely limited now.

Either they have to separate the two ethnicities deeply divided by a protracted war by accepting the two nation states in the island, or allow the Sinhala nation’s attempt of genocide and total annihilation of Tamil identity, and in the process face protracted turmoil in the island coupled with backfire of global Tamils.
It is for the world authorities to decide whether their interests in Colombo are that worthy or important.
