Acid test for international actors

It is clear that the Colombo government is waging a direct war on unarmed civilians with the intention of intimidation and subjugation of them. The hard truth is that for chauvinistic Colombo war with Eezham Tamil civilians is more important than its war with the Tigers. The war with the LTTE is only a part of the agenda aimed at making the Tamils orphans first. India and the Co-Chairs countries have a direct responsibility in perpetrating the present war leading to the genocide of Tamils. They cannot dodge their responsibility accusing the LTTE or saying it is internal affair of Sri Lanka and citing Russia and China possibly vetoing a move in the UN. Their immediate responsibility now is providing food and medicine to the civilians at their doorstep, unconditionally, even if it is going to be against the wishes of Colombo, writes an IDP activist in Vanni.

The translated and edited version of the article follows:

How the Indian Establishment, the Co-Chairs countries and others like China and Russia, are going to respond to the civilian tragedy in Vanni will be the acid test in deciding their future stakes not only in the island of Sri Lanka and with Eezham Tamils, but also with the Tamils of Tamil Nadu, global Tamils and above all, the civilized masses all over the world, who are now silently watching the crime Colombo is committing on Eezham Tamils.

The foremost of the crime is Colombo denying food and medicine to civilians whom the genocidal government is claiming as its own citizens.

Starvation deaths, epidemics, scarcity of potable water and scavenger life of people, numbering 300 000, congested in the small pocket declared as safe zone are confirmed facts.

With sinister intentions Colombo underplays the number of civilians and the Indian Establishment endorses it, despite much higher figures quoted by UN officials.

It is by the announcement of Colombo the civilians are herded into an inhospitable terrain. But this declared safe zone has become a killing ground of deaths and injuries to hundreds every day, caused by bombing and shelling of Sri Lanka’s forces using dangerous and prohibited weapons like cluster bombs, shells and fire bombs.

It is clear that the Colombo government is waging a direct war on unarmed civilians with the intention of intimidation and subjugation of them.

The hard truth is that for chauvinistic Colombo war with Eezham Tamil civilians is more important than its war with the LTTE.

The war with the LTTE is only a part of the agenda aimed at making the Tamils orphans first.

The demand of Colombo calling for the civilians to move to internment camps, aiming to eliminate a chosen part of them in the screening process and keep the remaining as war prisoners behind the barbed wire for years, is the crucial part of Colombo’s war agenda with Eezham Tamil people.

Unfortunately there are abettors to Colombo’s agenda in the Indian Establishment and among the world powers.

Colombo and its abettors are frustrated at the determination of the civilians of Vanni to stick to their fighters and in seeing the fury of the diaspora not turning towards the LTTE but pointing fingers only at them.
Rather than understanding the pulse of the people and mending their ways, the belligerents have decided to punish the civilians further.

Criminal minds in the Colombo government and media persons have already started openly defending the elimination of Tamil civilians, arguing ‘it is worth’.

A few days ago, a former Bush adviser brought in the example of Biafra, shamelessly defended it and implied it as an inspiration to sort out matters ‘decisively’ in the island of Sri Lanka.

They didn’t ask the UN or never thought the crisis was internal to Sri Lanka when they tilted the balance in the island and perpetrated a war there.

Their immediate responsibility now is providing food and medicine to the civilians at their doorstep, unconditionally, even if it is going to be against the wishes of Colombo.

Defying the sovereignty of a genocidal state is not an international crime, but it is a crime of universal consequences to humanity to be perpetrators and abettors of a war, and not stopping it even after seeing it turning genocidal.

Stopping the war without conditions, allowing civilians in their own place of choice and enforcing direct international guarantee cum monitoring are what required now, if negotiated political solution is what international actors actually envisage for Sri Lanka.

If genocide is what they envisage, they may continue with lip services and ‘balanced statements’, but the consequences, whatever turn they may take, are not going to bring in any respect to the international actors for generations to come, affecting their interests regionally and internationally.

The present war was perpetrated on the pretext of ‘terrorism’. The time for the acid test has come now, disseminating internationally what is actually terrorism against humanity.
