Sri Lankan government forces on Monday found 50 bodies of Tamil Tiger rebels after a fresh battle in the north-east of the country, army spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara said.

The guerrillas died in heavy fighting on Sunday after they launched counter-attacks against advancing troops in the district of Mullaittivu, where more than 100 rebels were killed on Friday and Saturday, Nanayakkara said.

"We have this morning found the bodies of at least 50 Tigers after yesterday’s fighting," he said. "Security forces also lost a few soldiers and a few more were wounded."
