SLA abducts 11 students from Koapaay detention camp

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers forcibly took away Sunday eleven students held along with their parents in the SLA detention camp in Koappaay Teacher Training College hostel, according to Education officials who visited the detention centre Monday. The students were taken to the SLA Rehabilitation Camp in Thellippalai, the parents of the students told the officials. This incident has created shock and fear among the detainees held in the SLA detention centres in Jaffna and Thenmaraadchi, sources in Jaffna said.

Some of the students forcibly taken away by SLA soldiers are to sit for the forthcoming GCE A/L examinations.

The other students in Koaapaay detention centre rejected the educational materials given to them by the Education officials.

The parents of the students are angry and frustrated that the government authorities had not shown any concern for their children being forcibly taken away by SLA soldiers.

The students had been daily accompanied by SLA soldiers and police to Koappaay Maha Viththiyaalayam located in front of the detention centre.

Jaffna Government Agent (GA) K. Ganesh has called for an urgent meeting at Jaffna Secretariat Tuesday to discuss issues related to the inmates in the SLA detention centres in Jaffna district. The Divisional Secretariat officials and representatives of NGOs have been invited to participate in the meeting where the abduction of students from the detention centre will be discussed, Jaffna Secretariat sources said.

Meanwhile, it is said that SLA soldiers have forcibly taken away students from their detention centres in Thenmaraadchi too.

However, it is not known as to how many students had been taken away by SLA soldiers from these detention centres.
