I am neutral on Lankan Tamils issue’ : Karunanidhi

Asserting that he was neutral on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M Karunanidhi today said a solution to the ethnic crisis in the strife-torn nation could not be reached because of the wrong advice given to the LTTE by some people in the State.

Replying to a set of questions, Mr Karunanidhi said a solution could not be found to the decades-long crisis because of the flawed approach of the LTTE based on the wrong advice and guidance given by some people like Tamil Nationalist Movement (TNM) leader P Nedumaran in Tamil Nadu.

”Those who are neutral and having love and affection for the Sri Lankan Tamils are well aware of it. I am one among such neutral persons,” he added.

He was replying to a question whether it was true that the top LTTE leadership had been praising Mr Nedumaran and his group for contorting his (Mr Karunanidhi’s) remarks to treat LTTE Chief as a ”King” in the event of his defeat as done by Greek Emperor Alexander the Great to King Porus and that Tamils should be given equal rights and share in power.

Mr Karunanidhi had made these remarks while addressing a rally organised by the ruling DMK demanding immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka to prevent killing of innocent Tamils.

Reacting to this, the Chief Minister said those who did not read the history or are ignoring the advice given by learned people, might laud Mr Nedumaran and his group for distorting his speech.

”Those people might even thank AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa for her resolution in the State Assembly urging the Indian government to send its Military and arrest Prabhakaran and extradite him to India (to stand trial in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case),” he added.

”But the LTTE has been misguided by such people (Mr Nedumaran).

It was because of the flawed approach of the LTTE because of the wrong advice given by people like Nedumaran that a permament solution eluded the decades-long ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka,” Mr Karunanidhi
