US ‘encouraged’ on Sri Lanka, urges aid access

capt.photo_1240856782202-1-0 The United States said Monday it was "very encouraged" by Sri Lanka’s pledge to stop firing heavy weapons in its war zone, but urged the government to let aid workers enter the area.

 

"We’re very encouraged by the government’s statement that it’s ending combat operations," State Department spokesman Robert Wood told reporters.

 

He also welcomed a unilateral ceasefire called by the Tamil Tiger rebels, who the Sri Lanka government believes are close to defeat.

 

"We urge both sides to abide by these commitments," Wood said, adding the United States remained "very concerned" about the humanitiarian situation.
