Ceasefire will encourage terrorism in Sri Lanka: Wickramasuriya

Sri Lanka has said that a ceasefire with the cornered Tamil Tigers in the island nation will only lead to more terrorism.

Sri Lankan Ambassador to the US Jaliya Wickramasuriya told a meeting of the American think-tank in Washington that "a ceasefire with the LTTE rebels will only allow the Tigers to rearm, regroup and reposition among civilians".

Speaking at a programme entitled ‘Sri Lanka: Beyond Terrorism’, he said "the ceasefire with the cornered Tamil Tigers will only lead to more terrorism".

He also outlined the government’s ambitious plans for reconstruction and reconciliation in northern Sri Lanka, where government forces have trapped the last remnants of the Tamil Tiger force.

Mr. Wickramasuriya told the gathering on Wednesday that the Tigers are holding 15,000-20,000 civilians as a human shield, and that the government’s advance has actually allowed over 1,11,000 of those civilians to flee the Tiger held areas.

He also denied the allegations that the Lankan government is shelling civilians trapped in the conflict zone.
