Vanni civilians in SLA detention centres to be settled in Thenmaraadchi

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) authorities in Jaffna have decided to permanently settle the civilians from Vanni, now held in the SLA detention centres in Jaffna district, in three large detention centres to be located in Allaarai area in Kodikaamam and Kaithadi, in Thenmaraadchi, sources in Jaffna said. The SLA detention centres in Mirusuvil Roman Catholic Church premises and Kodikaamam Government Tamil Mixed School (GTMS) will continue to be maintained, the sources added.

Vanni civilians held in the SLA detention centres in Kurunakar, Koappaay, Kaithadi Children’s Home, JU Kaithadi Hostel, Chavakachcheari Hindu College, Chaavakachcheari Ladies College, Kodikaamam Thirunaavukkarasu MV, Nelliyadi MMV are to be moved to the permanent SLA detention centres in Thenmaraadchi.

Meanwhile, nearly 600 students held in Mirusuvil SLA detention centre are to begin school on Monday in temporary sheds constructed as class rooms by UNICEF, education officials in Jaffna said.

The sheds are constructed in a land near Mirusuvil Railway Station.

The lands selected for permanent detention centres in Thenmaraadchi are located in Allaarai area along A9 road and Thamby Thoaddam along Chaavakachcheari-Kachchaay road, areas that are under total control of SLA.

The permanent detention centre in Kaithadi is to be located in the extensive stretch of land near Kaithadi Palmyra Development Board where two detention centres already exist.

Construction of eight temporary sheds to function as class rooms in Kodikaamam Allaarai area, are to begin on 15 May, and is expected to be finished before 10 June, according to instructions given to Jaffna Education authorities.
