Senior rebel leader killed in final round of Sri Lanka’s fight

Swarnam and Shashi Master, two senior leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels were killed in the fight, defense officials said Saturday.

Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara, the military spokesman, confirmed the two deaths.

The two leaders were killed at Kariyalamullavaikkal west in the northeastern Mullaithivu district.

The rebels who are facing certain defeat are currently trapped in an area of around 2 sq kms.

Troops are hunting for the senior rebel leaders including its founder, Velupillai Prabakaran.

Their whereabouts are not known, although it is widely believed that they are being trapped in their last hold.

Military said the LTTE’s over three-decade-old conflict has neared its end.
