EXTRA: Sweden urges immediate access to Sri Lanka rebel-held areas : Earth Times

Stockholm – Sweden on Monday urged the government of Sri Lanka to allow international relief agencies "immediate access" to areas formerly controlled by the Tamil rebels. Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said in a statement that "now that the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) have been defeated, the government of Sri Lanka has to offer immediate access to international relief agencies," adding that it was also necessary for Colombo to work for "genuine national reconciliation."

The foreign minister noted that tens of thousands of people were in immediate need of assistance.

The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, Sida, said it has pledged 27 million kronor (3.4 million dollars) in emergency relief.
