Misappropriation of relief food to Vanni detainees in Jaffna

Representatives of Non-government Organizations (NGOs) in Jaffna have brought to the notice of Jaffna Government Agent (SLA) the prevailing misappropriation in the supply of relief food to the detainees held in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) internment camps in Jaffna peninsula. Though the NGOs spend millions of rupees in supplying cooked food to the detainees daily, the food is below standard and the distribution irregular, NGOs told the GA. Nearly 40% of the daily relief food supply is being misappropriated.

The Federation of Jaffna NGOs has already made representations to Jaffna GA regarding the above malpractice.

Despite the request to ensure the orderly supply of good food to the detainees, misappropriation continues unchecked.

The detainees continue to complain that the food given to them is poor and insufficient.

The NGOs have decided to set up notice boards in the internment camps where a list of food items supplied each day will be displayed.

There are nearly 13,000 Vanni civilians held in the SLA internment camps in Jaffna peninsula.
