SLA rejects request to free Saiva priests, orphans held in detention centres

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Jaffna Commander, rejected a joint request made by Jaffna Government Agent (GA) and Jaffna District High Court Judge to release the Saiva priests and children orphaned or separated from their parents, from the SLA detention centres in Jaffna district, in a meeting held Saturday in the SLA head quarters in Palaali High Security Zone, sources in Jaffna said. The commander said that their release could be considered only after it is established that they have no connection with ‘terrorists’, the sources added.

Non-government Organizations (NGOs) in Jaffna had come forward to take the children without parents held in the detention centres into their care.

The request, however, was turned down by the SLA High Command.

Meanwhile, 213 persons over 60 years of age held in the SLA detention centres would be allowed to go and live with their relatives who had applied to take in charge of the elderly persons, the GA said in media report Saturday.

The GA had asked the above relatives to take over the elderly persons immediately.

GA’s report also said that 227 members of 111 families who had been held separately in different detention centres in Jaffna district had been united with their families.
