Karunanidhi slams Jayalalithaa on Lankan Tamils issue

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday slammed his arch rival and AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa for taking up the Sri Lankan Tamils issue "only at the time of elections."

In a letter to his party cadre, he alleged Ms. Jayalalithaa had justified killings of Tamils in Sri Lanka during the armed conflict by saying civilian deaths were common in a conflict zone.

She had also tabled a resolution in the state Assembly demanding arrest and extradition of LTTE leader Prabakharan in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, he said.

"She boycotted many pro-Lankan Tamils events initiated by DMK government such as the all-party meeting, the human chain, and the all-party delegation that met the Prime Minister.

"She took up the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, including her demand for a separate Eelam, only at the time of elections," Mr. Karunanidhi said.

He enlisted various steps taken bi his government for the welfare of Lankan Tamils, including setting up of the Sri Lankan Tamils Relief Fund and despatching relief material to affected Tamils in the island nation.

DMK ministers and MPs had met UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to step up aid to Lankan Tamils, Mr. Karunanidhi said, claiming it was due to DMK’s persistent efforts that the Centre had agreed to allocate Rs 600 crore to Sri Lanka for rehabilitation of the Tamils.
