LTTE should have been nipped in its formative years: Lanka

Vowing that "terrorism will be completely rooted out", Sri Lankan Prime Minister today said it was a "mistake" that LTTE was not nipped in its formative years.

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake said though the Sri Lankans never believed in celebrating the death of any person, in the case of killing of LTTE Supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran everyone rejoiced his death because he was a "murderer" and continued with terrorism for 30 long years.

He said it was a mistake that the LTTE terrorism was not nipped at the bud in the earlier years, as it went on for a prolonged period and had become a "tree and had to be chopped off with an axe".

"For eradicating terrorism in Sri Lanka, some sections of the International community wanted to charge the Sri Lankan government under the international judicial system," Wickremanayake told Parliament.

The Prime Minister was referring to the nearly 3 years of intense war that culminated in the defeat of LTTE after the death of Prabhakaran.

"We will completely eradicate terrorism", he said in a debate, adding the ‘shades of terrorism’ would also be rooted out.
