Sri Lanka pressures Australia over Tamil Tigers – Australia Network News

The Sri Lankan government wants Australia to follow through with secret plans made last year to declare the Tamil Tigers a terrorist group.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation understands the Australian government planned in secret to declare the Tamil Tiger rebels a banned terrorist group in November last year.

This was despite opposition from the local Tamil community.

But then it backed down.

Now that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have been defeated on the battlefield, Sri Lanka’s high commissioner to Australia, Senaka Walgampaya, says terrorism is all they have left.

Hardcore arrivals

"We believe that a lot of hardcore LTTE personnel have come into Australia," he says.

Mr Walgampaya says the Tigers should be declared a terrorist group quickly.

Tamil community leader in Australia, Dr Raga Ragavan, says that is just a distraction from the humanitarian crisis being faced by Tamil civilians.

"By banning Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam, you are patting Sri Lanka on their back and telling them, ‘What you have done is good, go ahead’," he said.
