Tamil Tigers Will Form New Body to Pursue Self-Rule (Update1)

Sri Lanka’s Tamil Tiger rebels are creating a committee to continue a campaign for self-rule, the group’s head of international relations said today, a month after it was defeated in battle and its leader was killed.

“It is time now for us to move forward with our political vision towards our freedom, bearing in mind the practical realities in our homeland,” Selvarasa Pathmanathan said in a recorded statement sent by e-mail.

The “provisional transnational government” will be “the voice and conscience of the people of Tamil Eelam in the international arena,” Pathmanathan said, without saying where the committee would be based.
