Opposition stage walk out on Speaker’s no to resolution on Lanka

The main Opposition AIADMK and its ally, the Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) today staged a walk out from the Tamil Nadu Assembly after making a vain bid to move a resolution, demanding that Sri Lanka be prosecuted in the International Court of Justice for killing thousands of innocent Tamils.

Soon after the question hour, Mr D Jayakumar (AIADMK) demanded that the Speaker allow him to move his private resolution that the island nation be prosecuted in the International Court of Justice for genocide of more than 50,000 Tamils, violating human rights and the Geneva agreement.

As Speaker R Avudaiyappan refused permission, stating that the resolution, given notice of by the AIADMK member was under his consideration, the AIADMK members, joined by the MDMK members staged a noisy walk out.

Later, Mr Jayakumar told newspersons that the Sri Lankan army, violating all norms, had indiscriminately massacred more than 50,000 innocent Tamils in its war against the rebel LTTE.

For this war crime, Sri Lanka should be prosecuted in the International Court of Justice. He also wanted to move the private resolution to prevail upon the Centre to take steps to prosecute Lanka, he said.

He alleged that the DMK government, by refusing permission to move the resolution, was indirectly supporting the Lankan government, which had committed the genocide.
