Maavadiveampu IDP welfare centre closed

About 27 families displaced due to conflict from Eeralakulam village and staying in the Maavadiveampu welfare centre in Batticaloa district have refused to go to Pazhachchoalai welfare centre as instructed by social department officials. However they have gone voluntarily to reside with their friends and relatives. Hence the authorities closed down Maavadivembu welfare centre immediately after dispatching the final batch of Moothoor IDPs to Ki’liveddi centre, civil sources said.

The IDPs said that government officials forced them to go to Pazhachchoalai welfare centre and they refused to accede as their children’s education and employment for youths were not guaranteed by the authorities.

Meanwhile 171 members of 44 families displaced from Moothoor east villages were transferred to Ki’liveddi welfare centre last Tuesday.

Another batch of 51 members of 18 families displaced from Moothoor in 2006 and staying in Aaraiyampathi Vairavar Centre are to be sent to Ki’liveddi centre next Tuesday, district secretariat officials said.
