Moothoor HSZ displaced barred from resettling in own areas

Lands in Kattaiparichchan village are being cleared to set up temporary structures to shelter displaced families from traditional Tamil villages of Kadatkaraichcheanai, Champoor, Koonitheivu and Soodaikuda in Moothoor east division which fall under the High Security Zone (HSZ) declared by the Government of Sri Lanka after the 2006 military operation.

The families fled from their villages three years ago due to military operations by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA).

Some families are currently being sheltered in welfare camps in Batticaloa district, and some are in welfare centres located in Killiveddi, Manalchcheanai and Pattithidal as they are not allowed to return to their villages located in HSZs.

Social Services Authority at district level has taken steps to move them to temporary sheds in Kattaiparichchan village in Moothoor east.

Clearing of lands around Ponmanai, a suburb in Kattaiparichchan village, has started this week.
