State, unclaimed, lands in Jaffna to be acquired for investment projects

Retired Major Gen. Sunil Tennakoon, former Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Commander for Jaffna, said that action is being taken to acquire the lands belonging to the state and those unclaimed in Jaffna peninsula to be given to investors from foreign countries and the South, in a press meet held in Jaffna Secretariat Friday. Sunil Tennakoon, heading a team of officials of the ‘Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BISL), held the press meet along with the other members of the team.

The BISL team, consisting of Major Gen. Sunil Tennakoon, the Head of Security Operation, Deputy Director General Infrastructure, L. D. Dickman, Executive Director of Personnel and Administration, W. Piyasena, Executive Director of Technical Service, S. T. S. de Silva, visited Jaffna Friday.

The visiting team said that its intention was to develop enterprises in Jaffna peninsula with projects funded by foreign and expatriate investors.

The envisaged projects will include a hotel with modern facilities, private hospital, private medical college and a private university and the visiting team is here in Jaffna to explore the possibilities for such projects, Sunil Tennakoon said.

BISL plans to improve the supply of electricity and drinking water in Jaffna peninsula first and then invite foreign investors to Jaffna, he added.

Tennakoon further said that he is not a military officer now and had been appointed as the head of BISL after retirement, in response to question by a reporter.

The BISL team also visited the islets of Jaffna during their stay in Jaffna.
