Abducted youth released in Jaffna

Unidentified armed men alleged to be men of a paramilitary group operating with Sri Lanka Intelligence Unit who abducted Wednesday a 26-year-old youth from his house in Kokkuvil in Jaffna had later demanded a large sum of money from his relatives as ransom to release him, sources in Jaffna said. The youth, however, was released later due to influential persons intervening in the matter, the sources added.

Meanwhile, Minister Douglas Devananda said in a press release that persons trying to create an atmosphere of fear among the residents of Jaffna are involved in these incidents and asked the public to notify him immediately should they happen again.

Earlier too, Douglas Devananda had released a similar press report when three Tamil Dailies in Jaffna were set fire to wholesale as they were about to distributed.
