Court orders Police to arrest Eastern PC minister in assault case

Kalmunai Magistrate Mr.N.M.Abdulla, Monday, ordered the Crime Division of the Kalmunai Police to arrest and produce a provincial minister and his associates who were alleged to have been involved in an altercation with a Muslim civilian, in courts on July 27, legal sources said. Mr.Thuraiappah Navaratnarajah is the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development of the Eastern Provincial Council (EPC).

The Minister and his associates, while they were traveling in their white colored pickup vehicle, stopped a three wheeler driven by one Zeinulabdeen Nasrulla in Maruthamunai on Sunday evening around 3.30 pm. Both parties engaged in heated argument thereafter. The provincial minister and his associates pulled Nasrulla from the three-wheeler and had assaulted him.

The injured Nasrulla was admitted in the Kalmunai Ashraff General Hospital and later transferred to Batticaloa district hospital for further treatment, according to a statement made by the injured to the Kalmunai Police.

Kalmunai Police brought this matter to the Kalmunai magistrate’s court Monday.
