Sri Lankan writer among three refugees rescued by Navy

A Sri Lankan Tamil writer was among three refugees rescued by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and local fishermen after they were stranded near an island off Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram coast.

The writer, K Thirunavukkarassu, and the other two were rescued and brought to shore yesterday following information that three persons were stranded near Iyantham Thittu, a sand dune, near Rameswaram, a police release said here today.

During their questioning by police, the three said they came by a boat from Mannar in Sri Lanka and the boatmen had dropped them near the island.

The three were accommodated at the refugee camp in Mandapam near Rameswaram, the release said. – Agencies
