Rs 44.34 cr spent for Lankan Tamil refugees by TN Govt

Tamil Nadu Government incurred an expenditure of Rs 44.34 crores in 2008-09 for providing various relief measures to Sri Lankan Tamils living in refugee camps against Rs 39.90 crore spent in the previous year.

At present, a total of 73,451 Sri Lankan Tamils belonging to 19,705 familes had been accommodated in 115 refugee camps, including two special camps, located in 26 districts, according to the Public Department policy note tabled in the Assembly by State Finance Minister K Anbazagan today.

The refugees came to India from 1983 to 1987 in the first phase, from 1989 to 1991 in the second phase, from 1996 to 2003 in the third phase and since January 12, 2006 in the fourth phase.

The state government was awaiting Centre’s concurrence for various development projects for the refugees proposed to be taken up at a total cost of Rs 16 crore, the note said.
