Government yet to decide on 13 plus political solution – Minister Alagaperuma

20_07_09_jaffna_01 Sri Lanka Transport Minister, Dallas Alagaperuma, said Monday in a press meet in Jaffna that no final decision has been made by the government on the proposed 13 plus political solution to the ethnic issue, correcting Minister Douglas Devananda, who told the reporters that President Mahinda Rajapakse and the cabinet have accepted the 13 plus political solution. The press meet took place in the newly opened Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) office in Chu’ndukkuzhi in Jaffna to which more than a hundred media persons were brought from the South. Ministers Dallas Algaperuma, Douglas Devananda and Srisena Cooray were some of the political leaders present in the meeting.

Dallas Alagaperuma in response to a question said that every one may have an individual opinion about the political solution for the ethnic issue but President Mahinda Rajapakse will do what he has in his mind. “He will soon find a political solution as he said in his speech Sunday,” he added.

The minister further said that the political solution for the ethnic issue will not be the copy of some solution proposed or envisaged by powers outside Sri Lanka.

On being asked as to why Sri Lanka Army (SLA) restrictions and checking should continue in Jaffna though the government and SLA say that the Liberation Tigers are finished Dallas Algaperuma replied that one cannot expect changes to happen overnight and assured that the changes will come gradually.

The minister, in response to another question as to when the A9 road will be opened for public use, replied that he does not wish to mention a specific date but said that it will be opened soon.

“It is a false propaganda by some one to discredit the government,” the minister responded when asked whether the government intends to hold the Vanni IDPS permanently in the SLA camps in Vavuniyaa.

“All of them will be resettled in their own villages once the demining is completed,” Dallas Alagaperuma said.

Minister Douglas Devananda denied the existence of paramilitary groups in Jaffna peninsula and said that there are only the government armed forces in Jaffna peninsula, in response to a question.
