West decides to buttress Colombo

After weeks of deliberations the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has ultimately decided to release 2.5 billion dollar loan to Colombo on a 20-month stand-by basis. 133 million dollars will be made available immediately. The conditionality of the loan is due to be finalised on 24th July. Inside circles said that while the loan will relieve Colombo from acute financial crisis and pressure on external liquidity, it is going to be hooked with external obligations. But to what extent the external obligations are related to relief and political solutions to Tamils is not specified. Meanwhile insiders also said that the Indian Establishment was successful in convincing the visiting US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of the ‘inevitable need’ of saving the regime in Colombo. "If the UN shields the war criminals, the IMF rewards them," Tamil circles responded to the IMF move.

“Following Hillary Clinton’s visit, SL achieved a great success using the ‘China Card’, because India instructed Hillary Clinton to grant the IMF loan to SL, for, it would otherwise fall deeper into the clutches of China. This is another index that SL is making America and India dance to its tune playing the ‘China card’ once again,” said an opinion article in Daily Mirror, Wednesday.

The IMF loan will immensely help the credibility of Rajapaksa regime in getting similar loans and aid from international donors and other sources. India, China, Iran and some West Asian countries have already pledged aid to Colombo.

Sources in Colombo said that compared to India, the West was exerting much pressure on Sri Lanka in recent days to take a decision on immediate resettlement.

However, Tamil circles sceptical of the West’s seeming hard line and anticipating it succumbing to the lures of Colombo said: “now see who actually exploits humans in pathetic conditions as shields.”

“All of them are actually competing in confirming a totalitarian regime and state in the island. Unless the Tamils find ways and means to prove that without caring their aspirations no power could gratify its greed in the island, nothing positive is going to happen,” the Tamil circles said.
