SL Appeal Court fixes order in MPs’ petition to visit internment camps

Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal Monday fixed the order for August 24 in a petition filed by leading opposition parliamentarians seeking the court to order the authorities concerned to allow them to visit camps located in Vavuniyaa where hundreds of thousands of Vanni internally displaced people are detained by the Sri Lankan military.

Dr.Jayalath Jayewardene and Mr. Lakshman Seneviratne of the main opposition United National Party (UNP), Mr.Mangala Samaraweera of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (rebel group), Mr. Mohamed Hassan Ali of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and Mr.Mano Ganeshan of the Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) filed the petition.

This petition was fixed for inquiry on July 27. When it was taken up for further inquiry the State Counsel appearing for the Attorney General made an application to court seeking more time to obtain necessary instruction from the Attorney General regarding the petition. Thereafter the Court of Appeal fixed the order in case for August 24.
