Attend to Vanni IDPs’ problems first – Jaffna University Students Union

“We strongly criticize the Tamil politicians who seek votes without attending to the problems faced by the Vanni people held in the internment camps in Vavuniyaa,” Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) said in a press release Tuesday in Jaffna. “We are deeply dissatisfied with some Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians who do not attend to the immediate problems of the Vanni IDPs,” JUSU said in its press release.

The following is the gist of the JUSU press release:

“We are very much dissatisfied with the Tamil political parties exploiting Vanni people for selfish motives. Vanni people themselves will elect persons who sincerely work for the redemption of them. Only persons elected by the Vanni people will be considered as the representatives of Vanni people by the Diaspora Tamils and the people of Tamil Nadu.”

“We call upon the Tamil politicians not to fail the Vanni people with violence and their principle of sole representation but to build up a political system of pluralism and democracy that is in practice in the world today.”

“We urge the Tamil politicians to tell the government and the International Community the plight of the Vanni Tamils and ways to improve their condition.”

“Tamil society has to find practical political solutions to suit the needs of the present and future. Vanni people who are denied even communication with the outer world should be resettled in their own places at the earliest. All people, including Muslims, who were expelled from their places should be resettled in their original places.”

“The Vanni people who have lost everything need to be served first. The Tamil politicians should speak to us with an open heart about the plight of the Vanni people.”

“Our doors are always open for the Tamil political parties which come forward to find practical and needful solutions to the problems of the Vanni people who are now held behind barbed wire fence because of the political violence, unyielding mentality of our politicians and the conflicts among them.”
