India helps Sri Lanka in rebuilding war-hit areas

An India-aided project to rebuild the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka, which bore the brunt of the decades-long civil war, has taken off which will help the country in reducing unemployment and providing rehabilitation, the government said.

The project, launched as part of Sri Lanka-India bilateral cooperation agreement signed last month, is being implemented in the Northern and the Eastern Provinces under the Uthuru Vasanthaya development programme, an official said.

There are several development projects already being implemented to reconstruct buildings, roads and infrastructure facilities which were damaged due to the LTTE attacks.
