TNA ready to support MR

Sri Lanka’s main Tamil political party said yesterday it was prepared to help President Mahinda Rajapaksa to resolve the national question.

TNA leader R. Sampanthan speaking to BBC Sandeshaya stressed the importance of resettling nearly 300,000 displaced people as soon as possible and said he had met visiting Senior British parliamentarian and Conservative party member Liam Fox and discussed this issue.

“A solution when worked out should be one which allows all communities in Sri Lanka to live in peace and harmony without dividing the country,” said Mr. Sampanthan whose party was widely regarded as a proxy of the LTTE.

“The President has changed and made some progress and Mr. Fox requested us to help President Rajapaksa to progress further towards resolving the national question. We said we were prepared to support the President in his efforts to resolve the longstanding conflict,” Mr. Sampanthan said.

During the Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga presidency, Mr. Fox who is also a member of Conservative party’s shadow cabinet brokered a deal between Sri Lanka’s main political parties to share information on resolving the crisis.

He said he regretted that it did not work out at the time and added that the issue would have taken a different turn had the parties honoured the agreement between them.
