UN presses Sri Lanka to resettle displaced Tamils
The United Nations has sent a senior official to Sri Lanka this week to press for the speedy resettlement of 300,000 war-displaced.
Walter Kalin, the UN secretary-general’s envoy for refugee rights – the second UN official to visit in as many weeks – is expected to pressure the government to allow displaced people in the island’s north to go home.
Kalin arrived on Wednesday for a five-day visit that includes a tour to camps holding tens of thousands of refugees four months on from the end of the country’s civil war, Sri Lanka’s Human Rights Ministry said.
