Indian MPs to visit Tamil camps in Lanka – NDTV

Don’t make it a guided tour: that’s the DMK MP Kanimozhi ‘s message to Sri Lanka. She’s part of a delegation of Indian MPs visiting the relief camps there accommodating more than three lakh internally displaced Lankan Tamils.

This is the first time the Lankan government is allowing an Indian team into these camps.

Before leaving, the MPs met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.

"We hope this will not be a guided tour and that we will be taken to areas that have not been opened earlier," said ‬‪M K Kanimozhi, DMK MP.

There are reports of torture and appalling living conditions in the camps which have been out of bounds for the international media and even the Red Cross.

The MPs will meet Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse and push for greater rehabilitation and equal rights for Tamils.‪ The team, which does not include  opposition MPs, will submit a report to Chief Minister Karunanidhi.‬
