SLA obstructs media persons meeting IDPs brought to Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) officials in Jaffna did not allow media in Jaffna to meet and interview the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) brought to Jaffna from Vavuniyaa SLA internment camps Friday. The officials who had warned the IDPs of severe consequences should they meet or say anything to media persons said that they have been directed by the Ministry of Defence not to allow the media to meet the IGPs.

Vavuniyaa Government Agent (GA), Ms. Charles, handed over around 2,265 IDPs of 722 families to Jaffna Director of Planning, K. Pratheepan Friday.

1220 persons belonging to 428 families of the above IDPs arrived in Jaffna Friday around 7:00 p.m and the rest are expected to be brought Saturday morning.

The IDPs will be subjected to interrogation and they will be handed over to their relatives after registering their particulars, SLA authorities in Jaffna said. The IDPs are lodged in the interim camps of armed forces in Jaffna.

Meanwhile, 28 women undergrads of Jaffna University brought from Vavuniyaa interment camps to SLA Kaithadi detention camp were handed over Friday to Jaffna University administration.

However, two women undergrads taken for interrogation by SLA from Kaithadi camp are not among the above 28 university students released.

The fate of the two women undergrads is not known, University administration said.
