Lankan Army denies rift between Fonseka and govt

Sri Lankan Army has rejected as "bogus propaganda" reports that its Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka is considering joining politics due to reported differences between him and the government.

Reacting to the reports, Military Spokesperson Brig Udaya Nanayakkara denied any differences between LTTE war hero Fonseka and the government.

The false news was being published by various print and electronic media, Nanayakkara said, adding that General Fonseka is still the most senior officer serving in the Army.

Media reports about differences between the government and Fonseka are baseless and not true, he said.

"Such reports have been planted deliberately to create a rift between the government and the army which has won public confidence and popularity," Nanayakkara was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Media Centre for National Security statement.
