Anti-Rajapaksa alliance formed in Lanka

A United National Party (UNP)-led coalition comprising 12 opposition political parties was formed in the Sri Lankan Parliament here on Tuesday, with the signing of an agreement.

The coalition includes the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) led by Rauff Hakeem, the Democratic Peoples Front (DPF) led by the Indian Tamil leader Mano Ganesan, and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party – Mahajana Wing, led by the sacked foreign minister, Mangala Samaraweera.

This is basically an anti-Mahinda Rajapaksa alliance. Its main concern now is to fight the coming Presidential and parliamentary elections unitedly. However, it is divided

over who should be the common Presidential candidate. Some like Samaraweera favour the putting up of the ‘ sidelined’ former Army Commander Gen Sarath Fonseka, while others oppose.

The UNP would like to put up its own leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the candidate.
