Sri Lankan Navy opens fire on Kottaipattinam fishermen

Sri Lankan Navy was reported to have opened fire at a boat on which fishermen of Pudukottai district had ventured into sea on Saturday.

All the three fishermen had a providential escape, although the glass windscreens of the boat were extensively damaged.

According to official sources, over 700 fishermen from Kottaipattinam, a coastal village about 80 km from here, had ventured into sea by 239 mechanised boats on Saturday and were scheduled to return home on Sunday.

The Sri Lankan Naval personnel had allegedly intercepted three mechanised boats and had damaged all the nets attached to them. The personnel had opened fire at one of these boats by which three fishermen A. Karuppiah (50); S. Manohar (55) and S.Sekar (45) were returning home. The incident happened at about 7-00 p.m. on Saturday, sources said.
