Fonseka can quit to contest presidential poll

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has rubbished the media speculation that he will not allow General Sarath Fonseka to step down from the post of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), if he is going to contest the forthcoming presidential election against him, according to a report appeared in Daily Mirror on Wednesday.

Responding to anxious ministers about a news report that he would not accept Fonseka’s resignation and that he would be well within his rights to do so under the CDS Act, Rajapaksa said if the General resigned to contest the presidential election, he would accept the resignation “within half-an-hour.”

The CDS has a two-year tenure and General Fonseka was appointed to it only in July this year.
